Paradise Lost.
Norton's Anthology of Poetry is a good introductory text.
"There comes a moment for each man or nation to choose,
in the struggle between truth and falsehood,
between the good or the evil side;
some great cause, some great decision,
each offering bloom or blight,
and the choice stands forever,
between that darkness and that light.
Thus choosing the truth is only noble,
when we choose to suffer with its cause in the beginning,
before it has led to fame and profit, and being good makes you prosperous.
Thus while the cowards stand aside, the brave man chooses the righteous;
until the common masses turn around and call the faith that they themselves had denied virtuous.
By the light of the burning martyr, Christ, we follow his bloody footsteps,
forever building new crucifixes with the faith that never turns back.
New occasions demand new duties, ancient good fades with time,
those who want to keep the truth must forever move upward and onward.
Even though evil may prosper, only truth is really strong;
although evil may be the present champion and truth may be the oppressed,
but the oppressed sways the future;
behind the unknowable present,
God stands in the shadow, keeping watch above his own (creation)".
The last sentence by far is the heart and soul of the poem, and is probably untranslatable. But the image is very clear, God is watching the struggles of present day and keeping score.
