Why?
Why do some Chongqing college graduates receive four to six excellent job offers from Fortune 500 companies that operate in China?
Most college graduates have much difficulty finding jobs; whereas, most foreign companies in China have an equal difficulty finding qualified employees.
In my nine years of working 10000+ college students, since 2001, I have known several students who received four to six high quality job offers from Fortune 500 companies in China!
Who are they and why do they get so many hard-to-get job offers?
I have come to realize that they have at least seven traits in common:
1. They are all female.
Fresh graduates can only get entry-level positions for which males do not seem to an advantage. Of course, most of what we call ‘top management’ is male dominated; so they are overloaded at that end of the spectrum.
Thus, there are advantages to having more entry-level female employees than males. In contrast, domestic companies in China are often criticized for sex discrimination. They prefer to hire male graduates.
2. They are all shorter than 1.58 m. (5'2").
It seems that tall girls have more choices and they tend to switch jobs more often. So there is no advantage to having them on staff.
3. They are not very pretty, but they are not ugly either.
It is obvious that pretty girls have more choices and they also tend to switch jobs often. This is why most airlines in China stopped hiring pretty girls long ago.
The reason they are not ugly is because foreign companies do care about their company images in China. Also there are many more applicants to choose from due to having much better compensation packages. [Note: domestic companies in China are catching up!]
4. Their ability to speak English is not bad, but not very good either.
Over the nine years that I have been privileged to know 10000+ students in my English Corners, I have identified only 183 local "English Masters": those who speak English fluently, which includes accurate pronunciation. However, none of the graduates who hold four to six excellent job offers, noted above, are "English Masters"!
This seems to be because very good English speakers have more choices and they tend to switch jobs often.
5. They are all from small towns, not the big cities (but not from the countryside either).
This is because the kids from big cities are almost 100% from single-child families and therefore more spoiled, while those from the countryside are not exposed to the complications of the more sophisticated world.
6. Most of the graduates represented second class universities in Chongqing, not the first class or higher (but not the third class or lower either).
Why? Because graduates from the top universities in China have more choices and they tend to switch jobs often.
7. They are all smart and sensitive enough to have rather clear pictures in mind regarding what their bosses really want and they are capable enough to deliver what their bosses want, even without unnecessary instructions!
Do you know someone as described here? If you do, they probably have several of the traits noted above.
