Sniper rifles are designed to be very precise weapons. The manufacturers have to make a compromise between precision and barrel life. Most sniper rifles only have the barrel life of maybe 2000 shots. After 2000 is over, the barrel is so worn and imprecise, it can no longer be used as a sniper rifle. When a new sniper rifle is first shot, there is usually a lot of "fouling", because of the new machine parts, this is why there is so much care in breaking in the gun. For large caliber weapons, the amount of powder, and the large projectile mass, mean you will get even more than usual amount of fouling. If you don't clean that shot after shot, the barrel will soon be worn and the gun will jam.
In a battlefield a gun is already broken in so there is no need to do that.
