THE Ten Network is considering dropping the shock jock Kyle Sandilands from its flagship show Australian Idol in response to this week’s lie-detector scandal involving a 14-year-old rape victim on his radio show.
As pressure increases on 2DayFM’s owner, Austereo, and its sponsors to act, Ten is moving to protect Idol, its big ratings winner which begins a seventh season next weekend.
A spokeswoman for Ten said that while Sandilands would star in the pre-filmed audition episodes, the broadcaster was reviewing his role in subsequent episodes. Sandilands has been a judge for four seasons of the talent quest, which has a large audience aged under 18.
‘‘Idol is a family program,’’ she said. ‘‘We consider this a very serious incident and our executives will continue discussions over the weekend to come to a decision regarding his future on Idol.’’
Pressure on Ten is being applied from the London production company Nineteen, which owns the Idol format worldwide. A source in London told the Herald that Nineteen’s executives, including Idol’s creator, Simon Fuller, felt the scandal threatened to damage the brand and that they would back Ten if it dumped Sandilands.
Austereo continued to stand by its host and the radio show. Kate Whitby, a spokeswoman for 2Day, said: ‘‘We aren’t really commenting on our advertisers and what their feelings are.’’
Andrew Murfett writes: Sandilands was relaxed when contacted in New Zealand, where he is on his honeymoon with wife Tamara Jaber. Asked whether he has spoken to Ten, he said his only contact has been regarding logistics for the coming season of Idol.
‘‘I haven’t spoken to anyone. To me, it’s not really in my world. We dealt with it the day after and that’s the end of it. The only correspondence I’ve had with Ten is when I am required to be there for the live shows … It seems to be quite a big deal in every other media organisation except for mine.’’
