| 引用: | | First of all congratulations on being allergy drug free -- that is awesome! |
谢谢。
| 引用: | | 1. An allergy skin test could help you identify things that you're allergic to. It tests your skin against up to 80 common allergens. My mom did the test and it took her by surprise that she was allergic to dust, dust mite, and two kinds of trees (one of them is "white alder" and there're at least 5 white alder trees right in front of our patio! ) It costs around $1000; typical PPO should cover it; mom has traveler's insurance, and the insurance company covered about 90% (of course the insurance company gets discount from the doctor). |
我出国前做过类似的试验,诊断出好几种花粉过敏。中西医冶疗都试过。
| 引用: | 2. I talked to our family doctor and found out the following about allergy drugs:
* Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allergra have, if not identical, very similar effects. Allerga is the newest and requires prescription. Claritin and Zyrtec are relatively "older" and the drug companies decided to go OTC and keep the brands instead of going generic after 6 years of patent.
* It is viewed by many patients that Claritin has the weakest effects but there's no clinical study to prove it.
* Claritin and Allegra might cause some bone loss. In this perspective Zyrtec is probably the best. |
长期服用抗过敏药的风险一直是我的顾虑,而且对一种药物的安全性了解也需要一定的时间。为了降低风险,我是不断轮换用各种抗过敏药的。
| 引用: | | 3. These days grape seed extract seems to be very popular and it's commonly believed to reduce allergy. My mom is taking it too. The brand she's taking is "Masquelier OPC Antioxidants"; we'll still have to examine the effects. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. My mom also takes Colostrum powder (Symbiotics) and fish oil (Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil from Costco). |
Good luck to your mom。

My husband happens to be a very big opponent of them (while my dad is such a big believer... bummer ) His rationale is that many supplements are extracted by using chemicals and FDA has not evaluated them. And because many of them are new (e.g., grapeseed extract), there's not enough clinical study to evaluate their effects or side effects. One example he likes to quote is that a brand of Bayer's blood product turned out to be contaminated with HIV virus many many years after it got on the market. For ourselves we just take multi-vitamins... we think that we should be able to get the necessary nutrients through a balanced meal, hopefully... |
这是一个信息爆炸的世界。每天都有新发现,也还有太多的missing information。我们能做的应该是open mind,权衡利弊和风险控制了。
