In ancient times, most wars were trigged among countries due to territory related or religious conflicts. In modern times, most wars are being triggered due to economic or natural resources related conflicts. In the future, I believe countries will be battling for talents, or human resources instead of for other types of resources.
The most important factors that make US so highly competitive economically is that, it has been attracting top talents in various sectors (not just high-tech sector) from all over the world. Top schools, both private ad public in the US offer scholarships and assistantships (TA & RA) to those graduate students who received their undergraduate education in their own countries, allow them to take practical training in industry, and late be hired by the industry or academia. The government also offer Permanent residents status (green card) and citizenship) for those talents for them to stay forever in the country for future contribution.
Other developed countries such as Canada and Australia are also offering similar programs, and recently EU are starting to adopt similar programs to boost their competency
Ultimately all natural resource related problems would be solved as technology progress, which will be led by those talents for sure.
People, People, People. With exceptional people, nothing is unachievable.
So battling for talents - that is the ultimate war.
