The earlier immigrants of the US were coming from UK, the once No. 1 country in the world, while most of immigrants in neighboring countries were coming from Southern Europe. The earlier immigrants of the US had entrepenurial sprits along with experience, and some of them had capitals, who laid the fundation of the early US success.
The current US scuccess can be largely attributed to brain-drain type immigration, such as F1 & H1B, that is why both TOEFL and GRE were so hot during 1980s and 1990s in China. The US draws top talents from all over the world.
Of course, things like financial, legal, political, venture capital etc are also imporant to be part of the reasons for the US to remain strong in the world.
