The man who gunned down his family in an apparent murder-suicide was an engineer at Yahoo Inc. who was helping his brother-in-law settle into Silicon Valley and find a job in the high-tech industry, police said Tuesday.
Investigators still don't know the exact motive for Devan Kalathat's rampage Sunday night that left six people dead and one critically injured at his home in an upscale neighborhood of Santa Clara. They said they were exploring the possibility of a family dispute, but they don't believe it was financially motivated.
Police identified those killed as Kalathat's 11-year-old son, Akhil Dev; his 4-year-old daughter, Negha Dev; his brother-in-law, 35-year-old Ashok Appu Poothemkandi; his sister-in-law, 25-year-old Suchitra Sivaraman; and the couple's daughter, 11-month-old Ahana Ashok.
Kalathat's wife, whose name was not released, was the only survivor. She remained in critical condition Tuesday with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lt. Phil Cooke.
Poothemkandi had arrived in the United States from southern India with his wife and daughter about two weeks ago, Cooke said.
That was around the same time that Kalathat legally bought his second .45 semi-automatic handgun, according to police. He used that weapon, as well as a handgun purchased in February, in the shooting spree, they said.
Authorities said a neighbor called police around 8:30 p.m. Sunday after hearing a noise outside and finding Kalathat's wife bleeding on a sidewalk.
Scattered inside the three-story town house, officers found five dead in what police called a "very horrific scene." The 11-month-old girl was alive when paramedics arrived, but died overnight at a local hospital, according to police.
Kalathat, 42, who changed his name from Raghavan Devarajan after moving to the U.S. about 15 years ago, was found on the top floor, dead from a self-inflicted wound. Both of his handguns were found at the scene.
Yahoo officials confirmed that Kalathat worked there at an analytics engineer since 2004 but declined to comment further Tuesday.
Cooke said there was no reason to believe that Kalathat had been in danger of losing his job.
The family had recently moved from a modest apartment in Sunnyvale to the tony Santa Clara community of Rivermark, a 7-year-old planned community about seven miles northwest of San Jose with a shopping center, playgrounds and a mix of town houses, condominiums and Spanish-style houses that go for $1 million. His children had been enrolled in a nearby private school.
Neighbors say they were shocked to hear of such violence in their tranquil neighborhood.
Abhilash Appu, 32, another brother-in-law of Kalathat, told the San Jose Mercury News that he had no idea why the bright, quiet man would turn on his family. "That we don't know," Appu said, speaking by phone from a village in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Raji Rajan, a Sunnyvale lawyer who worked with Kalathat and his family to legally change their names in 2002, said she had vague recollections of him as "a very civilized, cultured and gentle guy."
Ashok Kumar Sinha of the Consulate Generals of India in San Francisco said it helped police notify relatives and will be working with the family to claim the bodies. Relatives from India and England were on their way to California, Cooke said.
