I think this letter, like other reactions from Wall Street, demonstrates just how out of touch these financial executives are from the rest of the public, which also works 10, 12, 14 hour days, under tremendous stress, yet cannot hope to earn even a fraction of what this guy received for his bonus. Of course he might not be directly responsible for AIG's tremendous losses, but as part of the institution he must accept that the downfall of the company should ripple through the entire organization. I used to work on Wall Street, but I quickly became disillusioned by the single-minded focus on making money, especially around bonus time when my colleagues felt like they were entitled to huge bonuses because supposedly they performed a service beyond the grasp of ordinary human beings. I can say that from my experience that the people on Wall Street are not smarter than anyone else, they don't work harder than anyone else, they don't suffer more stress than anyone else...they are simply more arrogant, and the expectation of bonuses only fuels that sense of entitlement.

Does anybody really believe that only four mysterious guys formerly at AIG, now even more mysteriously disappeared, were responsible for its ruinous behavior? When a company does badly nobody deserves a bonus, no matter how hard they claim to have worked. Listen, Dude, millions of people work harder than you, are smarter than you, and do vastly more for their companies than you, and they don't get $700,000 bonuses. You make me sick.

This exec refuses to give back his retention bonus when he's quitting, and his reasoning is that "I at least deserve to dictate how my earnings are spent, and do not want to see them disappear back into the obscurity of A.I.G.’s or the federal government’s budget." There is a problem with the logic- because those are not his earnings - he should never have gotten that bonus, which is paid for by the federal government. It is not his right therefore, nor does he in some way deserve, to dictate how those earnings are spent. That is the taxpayers' money. Just because he chooses to donate that money to charity does not negate the fact that it's not up to him to decide where taxpayers' money goes.

This letter could be Exhibit A in support of Leibnitz's view of the "soul" as a monadic unit. And explains why we, as human beings, are basically incapable of seeing the world in anything other than our own terms.

Very intereesting and logical letter. I'm amazed with the amount of his bonus and hope his charitable work is not a one -time deal.

The hypocrisy of this "letter" beggars belief! $1 salary indeed when you expect $700K bonus guaranteed! Where were you before you became executive vice president of the financial products "responsible for cleaning the mess created by other people"? Were you at AIG? If so, in which unit and doing what? If not, where were you and what was your role there? What exactly have you done to "clean up the mess" in last one year, and why in spite of your "10-12 hours a day back breaking labor" did AIG have to saved from collapsing by us? Why haven't you returned the bonus to the tax payer rather than donate it to charities (if we can believe you) and claim that as tax deduction?
And you NY Times? What exactly is your agenda in giving voice to this self-serving exemplar of corporate greed thanks to which millions of truly hard working people (as opposed to this self-proclaimed one) are going to suffer for years through truly no fault of theirs (as once again opposed his self-proclaimed innocence?) Have you published any resignation letters from ordinary people? No, perhaps because they didn't have the luxury of resigning; they were fired. From the day the House approved 90% tax on these wolves-in-sheep's-clothes I have seen nothing but report after op-ed in your pages lamenting the people's outrage, explaining why it is bad for the country, why we should let them keep their bonuses and move on to bigger things ... Shame on you, you mouthpiece of financial thugs! For shame!
