of rules of engagements in politics, while McCain still followed the conventional wisdom in terms of how to run a compaign. The differences between McCain and Obama are as follow:
1) The product vs the value proposition. McCain tries to sell himself -"straight talk" "I have scars to prove"; while Obama emphasizes "Change" "it is not aboue me, it is about YOU."
2) The base vs the new voters. McCain's selection of Sarah Palin was aimed to appeal the evangelical group - the conservative base, which is EXACTLY why Bush won in the last two elections beating John Kerry and Al Gore. Obama focused on the younger and minority voters who have been disenfranchised by the political process.
3) Top down vs Bottom-up. McCain relies on the conventional political machines from major coprorations, and big influencial donors and tried to sell his message. By contrast, Obama built grass-root organizations like wild fire, which has more to do with his experience as a community organizer in South Chicago.
In another word, you need to change the rules of engagement to win a game. Business leaders have a lot to learn from Obama's political campaign.
