Those are enlightened Americans, who have worldwide experience and knowledge about outside world. They start to see the other side of the story and understand the cost of maintaining this American empire. The pity is that their vote is not large enough to kick out Bush.
Most Americans back in States are ignorant of the outside world. Many of my colleagues still believe that US gov invaded Iraq to "spread democracy" and "the freedom is not free". I am speechless when chatting with them on middle east.
But those are actually very nice people, just misled by domestic media.
As I said before, US empire is on a wrong way--it used to inspire others and lead by persuasion. Under the Bush doctrine, it has become a selfish empire resorting to violent means only.
But if this empire really collapses and there is a vaccuum of power on the world stage, I do not think we will enjoy peace very long. The loss on US side is limited since it can close its door to the outside world. A world with several strong players with equal strength will be very interesting, not in a good way.
Your comments always reminded me what I found in the history of Roman empire: people in it praise it, people outside it hate it. When it disappears, the europe enters centuries of conflicting time.
