The author obviously doesn’t have much knowledge about telecommunication business, its cost structure. He did not get facts right too. When Motorola had 150,000 people, it had the manufacturing business which it sold, along with 800,000 to 900,000 workers. So head count reduction was large by any measures, but not terribly bad comparing to its peers, namely Lucent, Nortel. The problem with Motorola is its very high cost structure and cumbersome corporate culture that can’t be changed easily, same as that of Lucent and Nortel. So when the profit collapse, its cost wasn’t reduced fast enough to match the loss of revenue and loss elevated. The same cost structure also causes the trouble in its mobile units. Since it can’t match the cost of mobile built by Nokia, it has depended on renovation like StarTac and Razr to maintain the profit margin. When price war it initiated aiming for market share dragged down the margin, and new products failed to generate the same buzz as Razr did, it fumbled again.
It may be difficult to comprehensive at first, Motorola, along with Nokia, is not in direct competition with iphone. Motorola and Nokia sell hundreds of millions of mobile phone every year, while Apple has a target of 10 million of Iphone sales by the end of 2008.
BTW, the Motorola China is part of Motorola; the money in China is still the money of Motorola. The reason for Motorola to have money in China or other countries is due to the US tax code that double taxes the profit when it is being transferred back to US. It did so in 2002 and 2003 to take advantage of temporary ban on taxation.
