... foolish, although I can tell she's definitely not hungry
The best part of playing golf in China is service! You get a caddie to carry the bag, hold the umbrella, search the ball, wipe the club, rake the bunker, mark the ball, show the putting line, and this list of things keeps going on and on and on. For that, you pay a RMB100-200 caddie fee plus RMB50-100 tip.
The second best part is access to great facilities inside the clubhouse, normally equipped with shower, sauna, spa, some even with natural hot spring and massage. Forgive me, no "extra" service though. For that, you pay another RMB200-300 facility fee. In US, other than a few private club, I've yet to find such a great amenity that's so common in China, or even anything close.
Then there comes the standard green fee.
So, a round of golf on a decent course/club will typically cost RMB 500-800 for week days or RMB 1000-2000 for weekends. But if you're a member, with an initial deposit of RMB10-500K (depending on club) and annual membership due of RMB 0-10K (again, varying from club to club), you get waiver for all the above fees and also enjoy discount rate for your friends.
I guess, your rich friend must be talking about the caddie fee and facility fee, when she talked about "tax" so innocently. Hello, there is no free lunch in this world. You paid for what you get.
