English is a Germanic language, thus very different from those Latin languages.

German is similar to English, thus, you can pretty much guess out meanings of many words. Actually Germany has very low percentage of people who can speak and write in English--big European nations all have this problem.
If you meet more people from Sweden/Denmark/Finland/Holland, you will be amazed at their fluent English (British accent).
