control of gov, media and economic resources. The majority has the discretion of imposing things on minority.
The minority has to worry about something different, since their survival in a society might be endangered by the action of the majority.
You ask many white people before 1960s about the civil rights. Of course they did not care, because they were not the group to be mistreated. But for African Americans and Jews, it was a matter of life and death.
It is like all US citizens are surprised at immigrant's obsession with H1b, but you know you really have to be concerned at any legal initiatives to enlarge or constrain this program in the future...
