Where is your conference center? If it is not far from your hotel, it is not necessary for you to rent a car. In fact it's better you use taxi and shuttle service to go around. If you want to enjoy subway, it is also convenient.
1. Nice hotel always in nice area. That area is the most safe part and the central part of Chicago. It is very safe in the night time, even though some famous bars and clubs are all only several blocks away. Jazz bar, dancing club, blue house, etc. You can visit famous 'Excalibur' club to enjoy the night life in Chicago.
2. You can find a lot of visiting place just around your hotel. Depends on your age and hobbies, you can choose whatever you like. Don't waste the chance. Your next door is the Tribune tower, under the bridge there is a river tour site....
3. If your conference center is not far away, it's not necessary for you to rent a car, only if you wanted to play golf outside the city or visit Bull's home. Take taxi or city tour shuttle. The second one is free.
4. Chinatown is not far away, you can go there by subway. There are many wonderful dining place around. Try chop house, 3/5 ranked American no. 1 steak house. Or go to north suburb to try famous 'Bob chan' crabs.
