Telecom is the strongest area in Dallas (Energy (eg exxon-mobile) and defense (eg Raytheon) are also not bad as well). The world famous so-called Telecom Corridor is here. Even Huawei and ZTE put their US headquarters in Dallas. But competition is white-hot and it's tough for them. Nano, RFID, and medical devices are a few areas currently gets attentions (like many of the other places:-)). In non-tech area, I know a couple of people manufacture/sell the bags, jewelry and luggages
