One for the phone function, another for running the OS X, which is Apple's version of Unix. The OS will use a lot of juice from the battery.
You could be right...otherwise it is kind of stupid, to have a device with so many features, lasts only 5 hours.
It is still too early to tell...iPhone has not received full FCC approval, and it has to work out some early bugs like the iPod in its 1st couple of years.
Apple is also in legal dispute about the iPhone trademark with Cisco and others.
