Because of work, I lived in Europe in the late 80s for one year. When I came back to the US, I drew the same conclusion as yours initially.
I have since lived in US on and off for almost 16 years and have visited many countries in Europe and Asia many times.
It seems to me that US and Europe have a different concept of "being conservative"
For example, US is very mindful of "sex" related content on public media, but not the same degree regarding violence. Even a cleaned up version of some TV show has a lot of blood and violence during normal TV time of 5 to 11 PM.
In Europen, at least western europe, they are quite open about sex content. Soft porn TV program is quite common during normal hours on French, German, Belgium, Dutch & Swiss TVs. But they guard against violence very strictly.
The most interesting country is Singapore. The media is very clean. Sex is completely off limit. But sex service is widely available there. Another place of course is China.
Do you consider China more open or conservative than US or Europe ?
