SACRAMENTO
Senate OKs Zinfandel as historic wine

Gov. vetoes bill making zinfandel California's 'historic' wine
Associated Press
SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has stomped on a measure that would have designated zinfandel the historic wine of California.
In a veto message issued Tuesday, he said the state produces many fine wines from different grape varietals and that it would be "inappropriate" to single out one for special recognition.
"It would be a shame to recognize only one as 'California's historic wine,'"' Schwarzenegger wrote.
His action, which came days before the end of the legislative session, didn't cause any sour grapes.
"It ought not to be a zin to be for zinfandel," quipped state Sen. Carole Migden, the measure's author. The Democrat from San Francisco initially proposed making zinfandel California's official state wine, but watered down the bill after the state's wine industry strongly opposed.
Zinfandel grapes date back to the state's Gold Rush days. Migden's bill states that California is the only region in the world where "Old Vine" zinfandel is found, with some vines still producing grapes after more than 100 years.
Migden told reporters she may introduce another version of the measure. Another option would be to promote an informal referendum where consumers could cast votes for what they think should be California's historic or state wine.
"Next year we will press on," she said.

(05-19) 04:00 PDT Sacramento -- Zinfandel would not become California's official state wine, but it would be a historic California wine under a bill approved Thursday by the Senate.
The measure grants this distinction to Zinfandel because it has grown up with California, arriving here during the Gold Rush and flourishing in every wine-growing region in the state.
"This bill designates the wine of Zinfandel to be a historic California wine. It doesn't say it's the historical California wine, although it is," said the bill's author Sen. Carole Migden, D-San Francisco.
Migden's measure, SB1253, originally was much stronger, designating Zinfandel the state's official wine. That angered growers of other varietals and others who felt the state should not be adding a commercial product to its list of official state items.
Among the items on the official list is a state bird (the California quail), an insect (California dog-face butterfly), a dance (West Coast swing) and a grass (purple needlegrass).
Sen. Wes Chesbro, D-Arcata (Humboldt County), was one of two Democrats opposing Migden's bill, which now will be heard by the Assembly.
"The problem with this bill is it singles out one variety," Chesbro said. "We produce many fine wines from many fine grapes."
In other action, the Assembly passed a bill to protect employees of family-planning clinics by making it a crime to solicit, sell or trade on the Internet their phone numbers, home addresses or the workers' photos with intent to do bodily harm.
If the bill, AB2251, becomes law, a conviction could lead to a prison sentence of 16 months, two years or three years.
"There have been incidents throughout the country where this kind of personal information has been placed on the Web with intent to commit violence. In some cases that has ended in murder. We want to make sure that doesn't happen here," said the bill's author, Assemblywoman Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa,
The lower house also sent the Senate a bill requiring large grocery stores to implement on-site recycling programs to take back plastic bags.
According to a study by Californians Against Waste, more than 19 billion disposable plastic bags are used in California each year with about 60 percent of them coming from grocery stores.
The result is plastic bags that often litter streets, parks and even the state's waterways, supporters of the bill say. The measure is AB2449.
