I am currently evaluating two offers. Both china related. I have a short海归experiences about two years ago and I read this forum every day. I would appreciate someone share some perspectives on this.
Position A is a I-banking position with a top 5 US I-bank in HK. The bank is less successful in Asia, but has done a few IPOs this year and desperately need people. The guaranteed package is very attractive. Along with the low income tax, the after tax income almost double that of the position B.
Position B is with a US asset manager and cover Asia-related equity investment. The asset manager is large and stable. Again, the opportunity is attractive as they are growing the platform rapidly and the career path will lead to associate PM in a couple of years.
I am leaning towards B because I have family in US and have spent my past 13 years in US. However, I have always felt the need to leverage my China background. I think both will give me good exposure and leverage. Position A is more risky as the IPO business could suddenly fall from a cliff. The other concern I have is that the success of IPO business is really the strength of the reputation and relationship of the firm and its top people. It would take me a long time to reach the top. It seems in position B, my boss would be making investment decision and there is no need to cater to anyone else. If the return is good, I have a good chance to move up fast. The problem is that position A 's package is a bit too good to pass on.
I have a rather generic background. I have an engineering Master and worked in technology for a number of years before getting a MBA from a top 3 business school. I moved to Wall street last year. It has not gone too well with all the current market turmoil. I am pleasantly surprised about the many opportunities related to China given the headwind the general market is facing. (I am also in talk with couple of other firms, but it is similar decision. HK vs staying in US. I-banking vs buy-side analyst.)
