Zhang Liang, a journalist of Global Entrepreneur, linked to a recent report of Oak Pacific. In case you don’t know Oak Pacific, this company is treated as an icon in web2.0 of China. It has raised US$ 58 million in two rounds of funding. Its subsidiary companies include Mop, Xiaionei, Donews and a couple of others. The article is a well summary of Oak Pacific from establishment to its almost exploded dream of IPO.
Zhang Liang said this article has been blocked by three biggest news portals under successful PR operation from Oak Pacific . Luo Yihang, the author of the article said: “It’s weird to see a web2.0 company seeking block from traditional news portals regarding negative report.”
We have read though this long article, and found it’s quite informational and objective. It’s hard to grok the whole article. Several main points from it:
Oak Pacific is not focused enough. It has been exploring too many fields. It makes the cord business of the company not so clear. Recently one of its subsidiary Renren, a Craigslist wannabe, has closed the door. Before that it had given up further development of its video sharing site Uume.
It shows that Oak Pacific pays too much attention to capital operation rather than product design. The lesson for other web2.0 companies is that you should select the right niche and be very patient.
Of course Oak Pacific still has enough cash in hand. The story is far from end. But as an icon in this field, why be so stingy in sharing experience with others.
