From San Diego Union Tribune. Pretty scarry stuff.
Rady robber left with $43 after taking a short nap
Police characterized the home-invasion robbery as sophisticated and brazen, but the intruder at billionaire Ernest Rady's house seemed more like a reluctant and tired thief.
At one point, he took a short nap on the same bed where his three victims were bound and gagged.
For nearly six hours Tuesday, with his captives not knowing if they would be kidnapped or killed, the man turned down offers of jewelry and Canadian currency and accepted only petty cash.
He rummaged through the multimillion-dollar La Jolla Shores home looking for a wall safe and big loot, to no avail. He said he desperately needed lots of cash.
It wasn't there.
Finally, he left in apparent frustration.
As he was walking out the door, he announced to philanthropist Ernest Rady, his wife, Evelyn, and a housekeeper -- all still tied up in the master bedroom:
"I am leaving now. I am going to take a taxi."
He got away with $43.
These details and more emerged for the first time from a preliminary San Diego police report and from authorities familiar with the break-in that has shocked La Jollans and grabbed the region's attention.
The Radys are recuperating and remain in seclusion. Ernest Rady, 69, bloodied and bruised from the ordeal, was treated at a hospital and released. His 66-year-old wife, Evelyn, and the housekeeper, Cecilia Barajas, were also bruised and shaken, but not seriously injured. All have declined requests for comment.
Police have said little publicly, releasing a composite sketch of the robber, who is described as Middle Eastern or Latino, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, 165 pounds and about 40 years old. The man had a muscular build, wore stud earrings and a black wig, and was unshaven.
Detectives are still investigating the crime. Some people who worked for the Radys have been questioned. Attempts are being made to trace an early 1990s beige-tone, four-door Ford Fairlane that was seen parked near the house about 8 p.m. There have been no arrests.
The ordeal began about 4 p.m. when the intercom/doorbell rang and someone at the front door asked for Evelyn Rady. The man pronounced the Rady name, often mispronounced, correctly and said he had a letter for her to sign.
Accompanied by Barajas, Evelyn Rady opened the door and signed the letter. The man then took out a black semiautomatic handgun, forced his way inside and demanded to be taken to a safe, saying he needed lots of money. He added: "Please."
Taken to a floor safe, he refused the contents: jewelry, passports and Canadian currency, asking instead where the money was. He was told there were no large amounts of money in the house.
Evelyn Rady gave the man her purse, and he took $23 before using a Taser to stun both women, and binding them to a bed with duct tape.
Ernest Rady, a financial services and real estate magnate, came home at 6 p.m. He called out for his wife, received no response and was suddenly zapped with the Taser, knocking him to the ground.
He, too, told the robber that he did not keep large amounts of money in the house. He offered $500 in cash. The thief took $20, the police report said.
Rady also gave the man his business card and said he could help him with more money in the morning.
Sometime during the evening, the intruder used a cell phone to relay a Rady credit card number and PIN number to an accomplice. He later told the Radys that he could get only $500 from the bank account and said it wasn't enough.
Police would not comment on whether money was removed from the bank account.
The assailant told Rady that "others" would kill his wife if he didn't produce a large sum of cash. The man said those other people might not believe he came up empty at the Rady house and hinted that they might come and look for themselves.
Ernest Rady told the man that if he wanted to escape, he could go out the back and skid down the hillside. Rady then was bound and gagged and put on the same bed in an upstairs room as his wife and maid.
Evelyn Rady told police that as she lay on the bed, someone got in next to her and put an arm on her pillow. She said she did not know who it was because her eyes were taped shut.
"It appears the person who got in bed with me took a short nap," she said in the police report. "I could tell they were sleeping because their breathing became relaxed and short."
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ernest Rady, a 69-year-old financial services and real estate magnate, made a $60 million donation last year to Children's Hospital, which then took on his name. He helped found the Rady School of Management at the University of California San Diego in 2004 with a $30 million donation.
