Carlyle, the US private equity firm, and Hong Kong’s Dah Sing Banking Group have purchased 25 per cent of Chongqing Commercial Bank in a sign of growing foreign interest in China’s mid-tier banks.
Dah Sing is buying a 17 per cent stake and Carlyle 7.99 per cent for a combined investment of more than Rmb1bn ($128m). The Chongqing lender is one of a dozen urban commercial banks that have attracted foreign capital in recent years.
