imagination.
The flight from Chicago to Shanghai is just a long, boring torture of 13 hours plus!! Normally armed with a laptop, a few books and the music player (plus if there are a few good movies on the plane), I can kill the time for no more than 5-6 hours. Then I am in "roaming mode." As I wandered to the back of the plane stretching my numb body, a thirtish lady started the conversation with me: "Are you from China?" "Yes, I am originally from Shanghai." I responded with a slight pride. "So are you going home for vacation or for business?" "Both. 90% for business and 10% for vacation. My parents are still living there." I volunteered to be more specific as well as more detailed to engage the conversation, because she looked pretty presentable and seemed like well educated, except 她双眉微锁, with a ray of sadness. After my propaganda on China's achievements in general and Shanghai's developments in particular, she stopped me short: "I hate China!" 我考. another 阿扁嫂? "Why is that?" I was curious now. She had a master degree from China in the medical field and she was graduating from a well-known private school with an MBA in one month and desperately looking for a job. Her husband graduated here with a PhD and then went back to China for a few months as a "visiting scholar." He never came back. He met a young girl with high school degree and they fell in love. So the man needed a divorce from her before getting married again. They had lived together for more than 8 months back in China. The purpose of her trip back to China this time was to take care of the divorce papers and visited their 3-year old son who was taken care of by her ex parents-in-law in a city nearby Shanghai because her professor parents both passed away recently. Her ex-to-be and she didn't have much assets to split with, no house, no fat bank accounts, not much cashflow. She said she just didn't see much hope for her.
I felt so sorry for her!! That reminds me of a song "Sad Movies always Make me Cry." I did mention I know someone working for a few big American pharm. companies which may have some openings but we never exchanged contacting info. I hope she has got what she was looking for and has happily settled since. She was repeatedly asking me why her ex left the mother of his own son with two higher degrees to trade for a high-school graduate?? I don't have the answer thus far. Do you??
