If anything keeps executives of old-line phone companies up at night, it’s probably telecommunications upstarts like FON. The Google-backed company and others like it are looking to allow people to communicate more cheaply using the Internet. Think Wi-Fi everywhere. First there was Skype, which used the Internet to help people talk. Now there’s FON, which essentially enables users to trade their Internet connections so everyone’s connected wherever they go. Cheap calls could be just one of the benefits. Many believe FON could become the next big tech success story. Previous efforts to develop widespread Wi-Fi failed. But these days, wireless-enabled laptops are commonplace and manufacturers are rolling out Wi-Fi phones. Wireless mesh technology, which links individual access points and effectively turns them into a larger network, could represent the future of Internet broadband. Red Herring takes a closer look at the growth of widespread Wi-Fi in this week’s cover story, “The Wi-Fi Revolution,” on newsstands Monday.
