I think there are some misconceptions here on this forum -
1. Let me start off by saying this trial is about the cop, not about 赵燕 - in other words, the fact that 赵燕 is a bad person and did some stupid things does not negate the fact that the cop used excessive force in the incident.
2. Some people seem to think that since 赵燕 broke the law, she deserves the beating. Thats wrong. We need to understand that in the US, all suspects are INNOCENT until proven guilty by court of law. The cops can't be the judge and jury and the executioner at the same time and deliver punishment. Street justice is against the law. You can't assume shes a criminal just because she's running away - although it is ok to bring her in for questioning.
3. Lets take a step back and say ok, she is dealing drugs and trying to get away, actually for argument's sake lets say she is a mass murderer trying to escape. Its illegal for police to punch the her unless its for self defense, which is clearly not case here. In the US, unlike China, nobody is above the law, including police. The minute the cop lays hand on her face, which is not part of what is necessary to put her under control, he breaks the law.
4. Some say, come on, this stuff happens all the time in China. But hey, incidents involving a cop beating a suspect into a bloody pulp is not supposed to happen, anywhere, period. And I would venture to say that if we let incident like this go by without a fight, you may someday find yourself on the receiving end of of cop's fists.
