After reading your post about social security tax, I immediately double-checked my tax returns of the previous years. It turned out that I did over paid the social security tax in the year of 2003 (since I worked for two companies at that time). What I did for the first step was checking out the contact information of local IRS office from their web site, and then called them the next day. I even went to the local IRS to pick up the right forms. When I was planning to file the claim during the weekend, guess what, I received the letter from IRS, saying that they reviewed my 2003 tax return and will do the “adjustment” to refund the over paid amount. No action is needed on my side. Just wait for the refund check to arrive after a few weeks. From the 08/23 I called IRS to 08/27 when I got their letter, there were only 4 days! Isn’t that too good to be true? This time I am amazed …
Also share the following info with you:
1) To claim the previous over paid tax that has NOT been reported on the original tax return, use the form “1040X – Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return”
2) For the “excess social security tax withheld” of the current year (as in your case), you could report it on the form 1040 “Payment” section. This assumes you have more than one employer and none of them withholds the tax over the required cap amount but total number added up exceeds the cap.
3) In the case that your employer over withholds the tax, you must ask that employer for the refund, instead of asking IRS.
