The former has the subtitle: "The Art of Winning an Unfair Game" and is by Michael Lewis, so if you like "Liar's Poker", you'd love it. It's about the winning formula of the successful management team at Oakland Athletics, led by Billy Beane.They took non-traditional approach to build their baseball club, using lots more quantatitive method to select talents. Their method and success have influenced the management style in the major league. For example, the recent management team at Boston's Red Sox, owner John Henry and his manager Epstein are of that school as well.
The 2nd book's subtitle is:The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions. But actually that's not quite acurate, since over the yrs many students and professors had involvement. It's about the infamous MIT's blackjack team, they are disciples of Ed Thorp's writings and bankrolled by investors (including former members), have successfully gained superior returns by playing blackjacks in Las Vegas and elsewhere, over a long period of time (10+ yrs).
These two books share the common theme: Geeks can win in the real-world. Here is a quote from the MIT's club:
"The MIT Blackjack Team. Giving new meaning to applied math. Keep this a place where you make your own odds."
