Citigroup gets OK for Chinese insurance venture - AP

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Chinese regulators have approved a joint insurance venture between Citigroup's Travelers unit and the investment arm of the Shanghai city government, according to a media report.
Travelers Insurance and Shanghai Alliance Investment will hold equal shares in the venture, which the partners hope to launch by 2005, according to an Associated Press report early Friday.
The venture is the latest expansion into the Chinese financial-services market by Citigroup (C) , which on Thursday opened a "wealth management center" in Shanghai catering to Chinese with $100,000 or more to invest, the AP reported.
Citibank launched a Visa-branded credit card with Shanghai Pudong Development Bank earlier this year and previously opened consumer branches in Shanghai and Beijing, the AP reported.
Two other U.S.-based financial services companies, MetLife (MET) , and Aon (AOC) , have announced plans for joint ventures in China, where, under World Trade Organization rules, foreign insurers can't hold majority positions in joint ventures, the AP reported.
Citigroup closed Thursday at $46.36, down 67 cents or 1.42 percent.
