Intel to build new 3-D transistor in Chandler

The new Tri-Gate 3-D transistor from Intel will be built in Chandler, among other locations.
Intel Corp. is rolling out a new three-dimensional transistor for its computer chips that the company says will provide more power and more efficiency in future semiconductors.
The proprietary design is meant to keep Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) at the cutting edge of semiconductor design and allow it to continue doubling the number of transistors on its chips every couple of years.
The company’s Chandler campus, which recently had one fab upgraded and will have another built in the next few years, will be one of the five locations where the new 22-nanometer transistor will be manufactured and used, company officials said.
“Intel’s scientists and engineers have once again reinvented the transistor, this time utilizing the third dimension,” said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO in a statement. “Amazing, world-shaping devices will be created from this capability as we advance Moore’s Law into new realms.”
Moore’s Law, named for Intel founder Gordon Moore, states that the number of transistors on integrated circuits will double roughly every two years.
The physics of meeting Moore’s Law had been vexing designers for more than a decade. As the two-dimensional transistor designs kept getting smaller and smaller, problems would begin cropping up with current leakage, making the chips unstable.
