Border's Kobo e-book reader
In a world mad on features, the simplicity of the Kobo e-reader is quite refreshing.
The point is that the gadget-mad might be left feeling somewhat like an alcoholic at a tea party, but those wanting a foothold in the e-reader market at the agreeable price of $199 shouldn't care that it's low on bling. Why would they, when there's so much reading to do?
And much of the reading you on the Kobo won't cost a dime, with 100 classics including Huckleberry Finn and Jane Eyre pre-loaded and hundreds more out-of-copyright titles available for free download through the Kobo e-store. New releases will cost $10-$15.
The Kobo has a nice, firm feel thanks to the ''quilted'' back and I was able to fire it up and start reading without having to refer to the seven-page full-colour user guide.
The blue touch pad makes for intuitive navigation – left and right to turn the page, and up and down to increase or decrease the font size.
Like the Amazon Kindle, the Kobo has a six-inch display, but it differs in connectivity. Where the Kindle packs in 3G capabilities and 16 levels of grey-scale, the Kobo has no Wi-Fi (it can pair with a BlackBerry via bluetooth) and only eight levels of grey e-ink, which may be a cause of the clunkiness that results during page changes.
Still, the Kobo has an impressive two-week battery life, but it's only chargeable through the mini-USB port (although it is compatible with some BlackBerry AC chargers).
The Kobo can store up to 1000 averaged-sized books so fans of Tolstoy may wish to keep a 4GB memory card handy. With support for PDF files, the Kobo can also be used to review documents and refer to recipes for paperless shopping.
Sometimes the Kobo's simplicity can be stifling, given users' inability to make notes or bookmarks other than loading up to the page where you left off.
I find it difficult to see how business people looking for a tool to help prepare for conferences and presentations will take to the Kobo, but for a no-frills device for leisure readers looking to lighten their load on holidays or on the train to work, the Kobo is sure to please.
