After 1 week in China with uncontrolled dining and wining and no training, I was a bit anxious when I went outside to do some "serious" hiking with friends last Saturday. Our route was in Lantau island, moderately difficult, passing the big Buddha. We rested for lunch in Tai O, a run-down coastal village, then ran 10k along the coast passing airport and ending at Tung Chung.
One interesting episode was that part of the hiking trail coincides with route of the cable car (a major touristic attraction in Lantau island). People inside cable cars waved hands to us when they passed over. Some of the cable cars have glass floor so people can see through and apparently it was still summer and there were some pretty girls inside so...
The hiking part was OK; the only problem was about 50% of the trail was exposed to sunlight and it was hot last Saturday. After 5-hour hiking and running, I got sun-burned, though not severe. The running part was OK too; two friends who ran faster than me led the way so I was motivated to keep up with them. Eventually, cold bear + cold lemon drink + noodle did the magic after the hard work-out: life is good, with hard training and nice meal and good friends.
