if you are in florida, texas or california, it is much easier.
if you are in northeast, then it may be a bit more to go through
basically, in most of the state where the political climate is not much against guns, all you need is a driver license
you walk into a store and pick the gun you like
today in some states you have to leave the gun there for a week (some shorter some longer) before you could get your hands on it forever
or, if you want to purchase a more exotic gun, go to a gun show, same procedure but sometimes you could get away
basically you are not supposed to buy automatic (semi-automatic is fine) but gun show dealers always get away from that
if you are a hunter (i do not hunt myself, as i do not want to kill animals) you need a rifle. that you can buy even at sport stores or some wal mart
for self defence, you want hand guns (if you have kids, you need to lock it all the time) even if you are all by yourself, make sure not only the safety is on all the time, but also
never have the clip fully ｉｎｓｅｒｔed and the first bullet loaded...
accidental discharge happens all the time that too late to regret and bear the consequences
in general, you do not need a gun license unlss you wear them for concealed weapon. which typically in texas it is just a couple of hundred bucks a year to pay and take a BS class
to get it. but in other states, it may get more complicated
i had a combat shooting coach at a police academy told me
(a friend of mine) if you get caught without license, when carrying a weapon, you deal with fine of a few hundred bucks,
if you are caught without gun when a guy walk to you with a gun, you will pay with your life...that's why i own about half dozen hand guns for some 18 years now!
also, in this country, it works like jewlery in china (you can put that in pawn shop for cash, if you ever come to that need)
if you have home breakers walking in, shoot (only if you know you can do it, or never show the gun as the other side will kill you for sure) to kill before they do.
several brands to go with on hand guns
S &W (revolver and/or semi automatic)
colt (semi automatic the caliber .45 is US gov standard for military)
browning (EU troop standard issue, many women on police force in USA use the 9 mm, but that thing jams all the time especially if your handling is a prob)
never buy the cheap brands as they won't last
