ther are typically 3 part courses leaing to the skill to single handedly handling 16 ft sail boot and it is really cheap in this country. normally it is the licensed skipper take a few for a group class. you should be able to do it after the three part classes. but it is still better to begin with experienced skipers but only start as AB
the 16ft sail boats are really cheap to start with for second hand ones. what may be a concern is the cost to keep it.
if you you want to start safe, there are even smaller sailing craft to begin with.
but it would be good for you to begin you own practice at protected bay area and stay then grow into off coast.
i had a great sailing 13 years around the entire carribean region
with my school budy who used to be a cruise skipper and knew all the people on those island on first name basis. we chartered at 67 ft sail boat and sailed two weeks that was some fun, if you have nerve for it. as for me, i went to two maritime acdemies. so it was really not much for me!
