US is not short of innovative Americans, but it lacks science and tech talents (due to poor math education) domestically to keep the innovations going on. So it needs to import talents constantly, which is in conflict with post-911 political opposition.
China is in poor bargaining position in this international division of labor. But if China can solve the problem of weak domestic demand, its emerging high-tech industries can be a big threat to US in the long run.
Very good point:
"Plus, as Jack Nicholson might say, they can’t handle our dollars. Too many dollars in foreign central banks leads to over-lending by their banks to wasteful domestic companies. Japan is just emerging 15 years later from a non-performing loan hangover – China is face first in the punch bowl with potentially half their bank loans uncollectible. If their currency spikes, it might go to 100%. "
