I remember one thing that I was taught at school was, a good leader and good manager both have to be "transformational", meaning adaptive and influencial to individual employees and particular situations. In reality, I have seen too many managers (they are supposed to be leaders as well in their own organizations) expect employees to be adaptive to them.
Management and leadership theories are washed out in organizations, especially big companies, when politics get into play. One easy example. While everybody is talking about cost efficiency, many managers, especially those in big companies, are first concerned about their own performace evaluation. They tend to have as many people as possible-even if they are idle, and spend as much as possible, because that will make them look good and more powerful in the company.
