quote from an US politician: USA is not a democrotic country. Ancient Greece was.
several points here:
1. personal freedom vs society freedom.
when there is a conflict, what should happen? could we trust people's good hearts that will control their desires under the name of' freedom' instead should we use law and order to limit 'personal freedom' as long as the law applies to everyone, should we obey the law no matter who the ruling body is?
2. 'democracy' and 'freedom' are different concepts. they do not always have positive feedback on each others
on the whole spectrum, one end is a dictator, on the other end is a '1 person 1 vote' system. US had success in '1 vote' system for last 50 years or so. IMHO, there are critical foundations:
a. most US people believe there is higher autority abovve their own interest. there is no sunch a thing as ' absolute personal freedom'
b. the material cost of manipulating 'vote' system is very high.
Neither of above 2 factors can be said about China or any Asian countries
