Using Bill Gates maybe a little extreme. But I have met many entrepreurers with over 20 -years industry experience and was a C-level executive before. You and I may think his business does/does not have a market but what do we know? In that case, who do you trust? some market assessments done by yourself or market research company or the guy sitting across the table with many years' experience.
You are right that in theory VCs would like to invest in a fool-proof company meaning no matter who runs the company, the business can still be successful. Unfortunately, there is very few opportunities like that.
I am not sure what kind of VCs you talk to in China. Identifying a great manager is not as easy as reading from a pile of fabricated CVs. I suggest you read some of Warren Buffet's books. By the way, I am chinese but work for a U.S based VC. I have talked to many Chinese VCs on various deals.
As far as posting my email here, I have to decline at this time for various reasons. One reason would be I do not want my email box flooded with business plans.
