economic collapse of different sorts. It has no value except that it is extremely limited in quantity and up to today can only be manufactured by god, or nature, depending on your religious belief.
You do not become rich by parking you wad in gold, you are rich to be begin with if you can afford to have part of your asset sitting in gold earning no interest, no dividend, and the only reason you park some of your wad there is because you want to protect your hard-earned wealth. If you had to flee China in 1949, Vietnam in 1970, or when the world's reserve currency was in question in 1974, gold was the only answer.
I don't think you'll see hyperinflation. But I do believe in double-digit inflation for the US, maybe in the 20s, just as we witnessed in 1970-80 when USD came off the gold standard. Now we are going to come off Brettonwood II when China is forced to revalue. I don't think it is a good move for China, but it has no choice, because inflating our way out of the ever-growing massive debt is the beneficial to almost everyone in the US, including the savers who are smart enough to move their asset into real assets so no one gets hurt except for some stupid foreigners who are holding a pile of USD cash. But who gives a beep to foreigners?
So, gold is not an investment, it is just a hedge against the inflation tax the government is about to levy on your networth. In the US, you are levied 28% collectible tax on gold and silver, as opposed to the capital gains tax of 5-15%. Given the high carrying cost, the high transaction tax, gold is by no means a good vehicle for investment, it is an insurance. But every portfolio needs a small insurance of some sort.
